UMass went 20-13-5 this season and 10-9-5 in Hockey East action, while Minnesota boasted a 25-10-4 record with a 15-6-3 record in Big Ten play. The winner of this exciting matchup between UMass and Minnesota will take on the winner of the region's other matchup between Western Michigan and Minnesota State, setting us up for a very exciting regional final in the future as soon as we get past the regional semis.

The Minutemen have had a solid postseason after finishing just sixth in the regular-season Hockey East standings. UMass defeated Vermont 2-1 in its conference tournament opener before falling to Boston University by a final score of 3-2 in the following round.

With six tournament appearances in the last seven seasons, UMass has been one of the most consistent programs in the country over recent years. The Minutemen were even national champions in college hockey in 2021.

Minnesota, meanwhile, finished second in the Big Ten regular season standings this year, behind only Michigan State. However, Minnesota fell in the first round of the Big Ten conference tournament to Notre Dame, meaning it was not in great form heading into the NCAA tournament. Regardless, the UMass vs. Minnesota matchup will be an exciting one.
