On Monday, the NFL unveiled its latest step toward international expansion, granting the Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers, and Washington Commanders marketing rights in the United Arab Emirates, while the Los Angeles Chargers will extend their reach into Greece. This move comes as part of the Global Markets Program, an initiative designed to fuel the league’s global footprint and attract a wider audience beyond the United States.
Dubai and Abu Dhabi have established themselves as premier destinations for world-class sporting events, hosting NBA games, Formula One races, and UFC mega fights. Now, the NFL is evaluating whether it can bring its electrifying brand of football to the region. According to Peter O’Reilly, the NFL’s Executive Vice President of Club Business, International, and League Events, discussions are in the early stages, but interest levels are soaring.
“We don't know the timing, and it's really an if in terms of whether we'll play a game there. What I will say is that's a market where there's strong interest in our game on a year-round basis,” O’Reilly explained.

NFL’s global game plan: Expanding beyond borders

The NFL’s vision is clear to transform American football into a truly global sport. International games have proven to be instrumental in increasing fan engagement, and allowing teams to develop followings abroad only strengthens the league’s presence.
Currently, 29 of the NFL’s 32 teams are participating in the Global Markets Program, spanning 21 international territories. Teams submit proposals each year to join the program, and once approved, they receive exclusive marketing rights for a five-year term.

While an official announcement has yet to be made, the groundwork for an eventual NFL game in Dubai or Abu Dhabi is clearly being laid. With top-tier stadiums, a passionate sports culture, and a growing interest in American football, the UAE is a prime candidate for hosting a marquee matchup. Whether it happens in the next few seasons or further down the line, the NFL is thinking bigger than ever before.
